D202 has been paying Calvin Terrell far more ($12,500 per visit) on an annual basis for years now. Last year, a few parents showed up to challenge his narrative and he called us "evil" and the "devil" the following day on Facebook - simply because we dared to disagree with him. My tax dollars paying for an outsider to come to Evanston and insult me instead of engaging in a constructive debate. Don't get me wrong - I approve a lot of what D202 does. But paying for Calvin Terrell to come here for annual indoctrination sessions is plain wrong.
Regarding 2 (b), do speakers have to follow District travel policies or their own? In other words are District 65 taxpayers paying for first-class tickets and four-star hotels?
Interesting. Back when I was in Professional Services, that phrase in our contracts (and I worked at some of the big boys) explicitly meant economy and mid-tier.
I get speakers are a slightly different kettle of fish but tax dollars going to pay for upgraded class of travel seems...off to me.
I've gotten some great feedback on this article and if you're coming to the comment section to dunk on me.. Fire away :)

“How can we monetize this?” was not my reaction. So thanks for challenging me with your out of the box thinking.
I got a lot of (negative) feedback on that idea!
Might have been a great keynote, no way to know. Is a video posted anywhere?
Not that I am aware of

The contract cites "reasonable and necessary" travel expense reimbursements. So most likely, I would expect business class and a nice hotel, yes.
