I would like this question asked of Joanathan Nieuwsma at every single council meeting since he thinks he can run for reelection and not tell the city where this money is. Revelle is a lost cause since she isn't running again and has given up on the 7th ward and is back to bowing to NU.
Thank you for this deep dive into the missing $333,000. This money has been missing for a while, and it is concerning that when Council Member Kelly raised the issue at a recent council meeting, Revelle and Nieuwsma did not address it. It is unacceptable that Eleanor Revelle (7th Ward) and Jonathan Nieuwsma (4th Ward), both members of the Economic Development Committee (EDC), along with Mayor Biss—who helped secure federal funding for the EDC—are not actively working to locate the missing funds, which were intended to assist those in need. This is yet another example of a lack of financial accountability in the City Of Evanston.
Very sad, but I can't say surprising. A bit surprising that two current elected officials wouldn't comment at all on it, I would be interested in their perspectives. I wonder how many other things like this are out there for Evanston. Thanks Tom for the great work!
Even more, I'm terrified at how many other things like this existed in the federal government during the Biden years. This is just one tiny portion of one agency, was there stuff like this across the entire federal apparatus? This all gives Elon musk so much ammunition for tearing it all down.
I think the reporting of the DOGE findings indicates that waste and fraud is occurring on a widespread and massive scale. I am glad that the work of DOGE is bringing federal financial mismanagement into the public square for debate. I am so many people seem to like their tax dollars being wasted by the federal government. The cost savings could equate to circa $1500 per head. I am sure there are a lot of needy members of our community that could use that money…
DOGE didn't find this one, I did. He deserves NO credit for this. It took me 3 months to dig through all the paperwork here, I suspect you won't see any of that from the ketamine adled weirdo.
Yeah I do think this is going to be a huge issue and there's a 0% this is the only program run in this manner. The herox site had a TON of other federal programs on it. The administration was stupid to delete all the records and take down all the websites, they deleted all the evidence of the very claims of wrongdoing they are making!
Elon's tweets aren't a legitimate report with proper sourcing amd transparency. Is there waste in the federal government? Absolutely. Is DOGE a credible source? No.
I know that Elevate is working with Evanston Green Homes via grant money from somewhere to upgrade 5th ward homes to be more energy efficient. I’m not talking about handing out weather stripping, but helping those residents to do things like insulate their attics and crawl spaces. I don’t know if that program gets its funding through this pot o’ gold but even if it does, it is a welcome program for the many houses owned by marginalized community members who could use the upgrade assistance.
So they can sell their homes for more money to the white people moving in. (I kid. Kinda.)
What happened to this money? There was supposed to be grants for people to make the switch from natural gas appliances/HVAC to electric. I’ve been wanting to move my stove to electric, but waiting for the rebates….

I've been to Quito, $330K will have you living quite high on the hog.

Fair point - YOU(!) have produced a fantastic piece of work here…thank you….but as you point out above….this is probably just the tip of the iceberg…

Plenty of waste, fraud, etc during and before Biden. MSU Prof Mark Skidmore has done a bunch of work on this. https://mark-skidmore.com/2024/11/19/pentagon-fails-7th-audit-in-a-row-unable-to-fully-account-for-824b-budget/ also https://corbettreport.com/interview-1407-mark-skidmore-on-the-pentagons-missing-trillions/ And that's just the missing money, not the money wasted on well-documented expenses.
Wow - This is an excellent investigative piece. I passed it on to several friends.
Thank-you very much for this detective work!

Yeah Elevate and CNT I think are doing this this year, with no help from the EDC.
Great research. Thank you! Someone at the Civic Center has some explaining to do. Hello?!?
They can do it from their posh new glass and steel office!
So!!! did the city get the $330,000 back to do a housing project?
No news yet!!!
I think it's called the "Inflation Reduction Act," tho I suppose "Infrastructure Reduction Act" might be just as applicable.
I have been waiting for you, taxpayer!!! It’s absolutely insane that bill was used for this insane free money program. Just so disappointed
